Understanding the Spinal Wave

One of the critical components of the Spinal Flow Technique is the "spinal wave". The spinal wave is the energetic wisdom of the body at work. We also relate it to the seven gateways of the spine and the close connection to the nervous system.

The spinal wave is not new; different modalities refer to and activate the wave, using different techniques and terminology for example kundalini, living force, Qi, prana, consciousness, vital energy, soul, divine breath, the spark of life, surge, and life force. Fundamentally, the wave is the incredible vital energy or wisdom which supports the human system's optimal function.

This wave or life force is the same wisdom that can create a baby from a sperm and an egg - all the cells move into action over time, creating organs, tissues, body systems, a person that breaths, thinks, communicates, cries, laughs and loves. An entire human is formed in only nine months, and a new life is created - mind-blowing!

The same energy enables all body systems to work in beautiful synchronicity. The vital life force is a beautiful symphony that keeps the heart beating while the blood circulates, food digests and replenishes and recharges our energy. The incredible living force allows your body to breathe without a thought, to regulate the body temperature, hormones, blood sugars, mineral salts and hydration - keeping it all in balance to help us stay alive. And at the centre of it all is the brain and the autonomic and central nervous system.

Now back to the spinal wave. If you have had a spinal flow healing, you will be aware that most of our sessions are performed with you as the client, facing comfortably facedown. In this position, we can connect with access points - there are 33 of these located along the spine and skull, which open and activate the spinal wave.

The wave consists of the energy stored in the sacrum and then moves through the spine (and the 7 gateways). Once the wave is activated - as a spinal flow practitioner (or healer), we watch the body move and change as we work. Small subtleties tell us a lot about what is going on in the body, changes in breath, involuntary twitching, vibrations, energy shifts, and small or large movements.

When the wave is activated, it moves through the spine, creating ease and flow through the body, moving and releasing spinal blockages, creating healing in its path and removing the "stuckness" from the body. However, when we observe an inconsistency or incongruency in the wave, we know there is a blockage in the life force, which causes issues in the body.

It is also essential to know that everyone experiences the wave differently. Some people experience the wave as a considerable, active, caterpillar-like movement (which looks very impressive!), but it is neither typical nor necessary for healing. Think about how the body can feel subtle changes, a pinprick on the skin, a drop of a couple of degrees in air temperature or even emotion in a room, and it is the same with the wave; there are subtleties the nervous system is very aware.

The spinal wave may be a change in breath, a sharp increase in inhalation, or a decrease in the rhythm of the breath. It can also change the awareness of where the breath travels throughout the spine. It may be sensed, like a rush of colour, a tingling sensation; it may be that a connection is felt, a relationship with you like you have genuinely travelled inside yourself. Every healing session may be experienced differently, without wrong or right. Not only is the wave incredible, but it is also a beautiful experience connecting with the body's wisdom, it has made me realise we know so little about the human body and all of its incredible functions.
