Changing Your Life to Support Healing
From the moment we are born, most of us experience stress levels that our bodies were not designed to handle. Think about filling a cup with water, if you keep adding water, the cup will overflow. It's the same concept as your nervous system, which is responsible for the fight/flight responses. If you keep adding stress without fully releasing it, sooner or later the system will be full and start to overflow in the form of symptoms: headaches, chronic fatigue, nervous system issues, digestive issues, sleep disorders, anxiety and depression.
As a spinal flow practitioner, I divide stress into three main types. These stressors are the root cause of ill health.
- Physical Stressors: These include injuries, accidents, poor posture, and lack of exercise. While a single physical stressor can be managed, a combination of multiple physical stressors can build up and impact overall health.
- Emotional Stressors: Unprocessed emotions are the most impactful stressors. They can wreak havoc on our health, hormones, and happiness. Over time, these unprocessed emotions can turn into depression, anxiety, fatigue, and other chronic conditions. Emotions are energy in motion (e-motion). When they become stuck, they create blockages in our body's energy flow.
- Chemical Stressors arise from the artificial environment most of us live in. The buildings we inhabit, the products we use, and the foods we eat all contain chemicals and compounds that our bodies perceive as unfamiliar or toxic. To eliminate these toxins, the body strains organs like the kidneys, liver, and lymphatic system. If the body can't properly eliminate these toxins, it may retain excess water or weight to dilute them.
Changing Your Life to Support Healing
I often tell my clients, "We are in partnership; I am 100% here helping your body heal during our sessions, but if you aren't working at making some changes in your life, then you are probably just adding more stress to your spine."
My clients have access to a stress audit, and you can also audit stress in your life by simply writing it down, using the three types of stress I have mentioned, and then committing to change in a specific timeframe. Just by recognising them and writing them down, you will experience healing.
There is no getting around the fact that there will be a lot of stress that you can’t change, some you won’t want to change and some that will be easy to let go of.
But beginning right now—today—you can start changing some of the stressors you encounter daily. Remember, to heal your nervous system, you need to change some of the things you were doing that created the problems in the first place!
