“A Tribute to Mothers Everywhere”
As we celebrate Mother's Day this Sunday, I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to all the mums, mummies, mothers, grandmas, and mother figures out there. You are the embodiment of love, compassion, and strength, and the world is a better place because of you; actually, not only better, the world literally would not turn without you.
I want to sincerely thank you because I know what you really do. We, mothers, deserve more than the pink flowery shitty bath bombs that seem to come with every Mother's Day gift. (Yes, I also pretend to like bath bombs!) I know what being a mum is really about and what a mother's love really is.
First, it's getting out of bed at 5:00am to get the child/children to some sort of training. Then getting everyone breakfast, and packing lunches, even when you don't want to and they don't eat it anyway. It's spending weekends on the side of a sports field, even when it's cold and rainy, and there's no coffee!
It's going to the eisteddfod, even though you hate how they all repeatedly sing/play the same song. And they suck, and it's boring. A mother's love is waiting in a car park to pick them up from art, dance, music, voice, badminton club, and chess tournaments. You get the picture.
It's arguing with your child about going to an activity they chose, and now they hate and don't want to do it anymore. It’s pouring all your money into said activities when your house seriously needs a reno! It's remembering to defrost the meat at the beginning of the day so you can cook dinner.....again. OMFG, dinner, who invented dinner?
A mother's love is afternoons of fighting with kids to do homework. Reading a stupid book with them because the school says "that's part of homework". Spending hours of your life sitting at the end of a bed, willing them to sleep so you can finally get five minutes to Netflix and scroll.
It's nights of folding, washing, putting it away and then seeing it all over the floor the next day because they were looking for their favourite item of clothing - refolding it and then putting it away again. It's seeing the same item of clothing back in the washing basket and knowing they haven't worn it; they were trying to please you by tidying their room.
It's cleaning out the crap from underneath beds and finding lost, well........everything. It's dirty plates and cups piled up on bedside tables. The "GET OF YOUR SCREEN NOW, AND TAKE OUT THE BINS" after you've asked nicely 12 hundred times. The chipped paint off skirting boards and walls, because they decided to ride hoverboards and throw balls inside, was a great idea. It's the sludge at the bottom of the bath and the bath toys covered in it. The toothpaste on the floor, mirror, basin, window.....ceiling????
It's the shittiest cut of meat, the smallest potato, refilling the toilet roll times infinity, being vomited, pooed and snotted on (and not just when they are babies!), its holding on to the edge of the bed for dear life when they need to sleep with you, and then waiting up to pick them up from nights out.
And you do it all because those little and big people you love more than your own life are absolutely everything, even on the days you want to go and live in a motel, in a desert, where those needy critters can't find you.
So to all of you, I celebrate you. You are absolutely incredible. And thank you for all you do, all the unseen frustrations, challenges, tears and heartache.
To my own Mum, sorry for the swear words; thank you for STILL doing my ironing and teaching me excellent table manners. I love you. xxxxx
P.S For those of you who think your Mum might like more than a flowery bath bomb, I have some options for gift vouchers to say thank you!
